Best GPS Devices for Backpacking

hiking will be fine since i can look at it directly but in a car, forget it.

i've now been hiking and biking with the 400 for just under a month and absolutely love it.

i love taking it hiking, fishing, atving, on the road, etc.

i use it exclusively for hiking even though it can be used for car navigation.

the garmin unit is an order of magnitude better for driving, but the magellan is far more accurate as far as position goes when hiking or geocaching.

we own other garmin gps devices for walking / hiking, etc.

for hiking or rafting or trip planning there are other more specialized gpss, but for driving this one's great.

i like how portable it is and how you can switch from vehicle to walking.

the first ones were like my old handheld magellan hiking unit -- slow and antiquated.

other thoughts: bought this for my upcoming trek across the us this summer.

i just finished a 12,000 mile cross-country trek, and it made the nuvi twice as useful in memphis, phoenix, las vegas, and others.

most interesting was the time i asked it to return home by the most economical way, and it twisted and turned until we were on rarely used dirt roads throug the woods.

we expect we can much more easily take the 760 on our walking and hiking adventures.

why does garmin implements this basic gps functionality in their basic hiking units but cripple their auto units?

my beach walking group reported similar tales of woe with their garmins this morning, albeit with pc's.

so it is much easier to use in pedestrian mode.
