For the international traveler, a good GPS unit can make life a whole lot easier. Your GPS unit can be your local tour guide in an unfamiliar place, while still allowing you the freedom to make your own itinerary.

When searching for a GPS unit to use abroad, check to see which maps are included. A GPS unit can work anywhere in the world, but without a map to mark your location, it won’t do you any good. See what maps come with your GPS unit and if the countries you’ll be visiting fall into those territories.

Also, look for a GPS unit that allows you to load other maps. Many GPS systems come with just US or Canadian road maps but are capable of storing more map data. If the GPS unit you buy doesn’t come preloaded with maps for your traveling destination, be sure that you can load new maps into it.
