After a few thousand miles using the new U83T from SONY, here is my short review: from Amazon.com After months of testing other GPS units, I am happy to report that this product is very worthy of purchasing for your navigational needs. After getting used to it's functions, it really works quite nicely. from Amazon.com After reading CNET's pan of the original version, I was hesitant. I tried a Maestro 4250, which got a higher rating, but it lacked stores that opened 3 years ago, and tried to route me on roads and interchanges that changed years ago. Old map data makes any GPS work badly, especially around newer communities. Researching this on the web, I found that nearly all portable GPS units have maps dating from 2006 or so. from Amazon.com bad item glass is the worse.. i drop mines from the dashboard landed on my shifter and broke the screen.. sony wants $250 to replace it with a refurbish one...(when i only paid $200 for it new)... bad service.. from Amazon.com bought this couple of weeks ago , my wife has a garmin 200w and we have been happy with it but the sony is just too nice!! beautifuly designed and bright screen very sensitive touch screen, great text to speech, far better than all i have seen including garmin 7200 which i owned .easy navigation for the price you will be very happy with this machine!! from Amazon.com Read a couple of reviews that rated it 'poor' but they appeared to be written by Garmin employees. All the 'complaints' listed have not proven to be true. The touch screen is very sensitive, mapping seems to be about the same as the last 5 gps' that I have purchased (including 3 Garmins) with the addition of text to verbal which is way better on the Sony. Will continue to test out this unit over the next several weeks on travel but so far, I'd rate it at least a 4 out of 5 stars. from Amazon.com -many options to toy with including font size, few 3d views...etc -mount works great even on rough dash and power cord is plugged into the mount not the gps -clear voice with good pronunciation and speaks the exit number from Amazon.com i bought mine for $229 at Fry's (73T). I test drove this unit on few occasions, as my Magellan is in repairs(due to their firmware upgrade). first impression was not too good, as i was spoiled by overly generous driving instructions from magellan, so Sony's were spartan, so to speak. but they are sifficient and work well. from Amazon.com I bought this GPS for a month now. I think it is a very good GPS and the split screen to show the details of the junction is excellent especially you are driving in east coast. from Amazon.com The Bluetooth was in and out. The routing was nonsensical even with the update. I went on Navteq to tell them about a location that wasn't on the gps but had been there for a few years and, after finding the street on THEIR map, was told it didn't exist. Poor map support I'd say. from Amazon.com
