Lots of commands and capabilites - beware that you need maps to make this truly useful, but they can be downloaded for free from garmin.com from Amazon.com The Garmin eTrex Venture HC GPS Receiver itself, syncs up well and the features provided seem to work as advertised. The problem is, the map provided with the unit is less than poor. from Amazon.com the manual that comes with the etrex does not cover the unit and requires a lengthy delay to access factory help(about 20 minutes).there is nothing in the manual on down loading maps or how to delete any stored way points etc. the entire operation is complicated to say the least. from Amazon.com The explanations for what this unit does were not clear and the unit did not live up to my expectations. It comes with a base map that tells you basically that you are in North America. I already know this and wanted more detail so I ordered the Maps on DVD recommended by Garmin. These cost an extra $100. from Amazon.com I've seen them for $199 on other sites. Amazon is great for deals! Also, you can't get a straight answer from Garmin's support site either. They just give you the runaround, and the directions to use the GPS are virtually non-existent. from Amazon.com I purchased this GPS for my wife's use. I have a Garmin Map60C, which she feels is too complicated to use comfortably, and finds too large to tote around. The entire eTrex line is excellent, but the Venture model offers the opportunity, IMHO, for a beginner to expand their use. from Amazon.com The only thing I found some disapointed of thi eTrex Venture HC GPS is the GOTO funtion final approach, I've tried many times and the result dos not change: some meters (100, 200 and maybe more) before arriving to the goal, make a turn 90 degrees to the place (a known place) and the arrow keep pointing strightaway. By this mean you will not go to an unknown place from Amazon.com My wife and I got the e-Trex HC for Geocaching. The features that drew us to this one were the high-sensitivity receiver, the USB connection for connecting to a PC, and the Amazon price. Since this is my first handheld GPS, I don't have a lot to compare it to for the sensitivity issues. from Amazon.com The only thing holding me back from a five star rating is the limited internal memory (24 MB). If I travel outside of my usual romping grounds, I need to upload new maps to the device, and then switch back to my usual mapset afterward. It's only a minor inconvenience, though if I were purchasing a GPS receiver today, I would probably fork out the extra money for Garmin's Legend HCx or Vista HCx, which accept micro SD cards. from Amazon.com I got this to replace an older Garmin that died.
