I am new to the Pittsburgh area and was having a difficult time navigating around....until I made this purchase. I love my Magellan! No more reaching for the map or calling for directions! It has so many pre-set points of interest, its impossible to get lost. I actually gave a Pittsburgh native very accurate directions! The voice navigation feature is like having a very polite back seat driver! from Vanns.com It plugged right into the cigarette lighter and started working right away very easy to use. BUT After just three uses - it stopped working. The navigation screen continues to show me the route but there is no voice with it. Useless frankly without it. from Buy.com I've had the Magellan 3140 for about a month, and had enough time to get to know it. I also used a Garmin Nuvi 260 for a couple weeks prior to buying the Magellan, so I can also do a decent comparison between the two. The Magellan was ready to go right out of the box. Navigating around the user interface and using the features were intutive and I had no problem using the Magellan without downloading the manual. Entering addresses and finding POI's is easy to do and the interface makes it effecient. The one feature I would like to see is a "view map" icon on every menu screen. Going from the POI menu back to the map requires about five key strokes, when it would be nice to have an icon on each screen to take you back to the navigation map. Satellite reception was superb. It took about 30 seconds to lock on indoors or outdoors. Compared to the Garmin Nuvi 260, the Magellan had a less refined navigation screen. The Nuvi screen had more vibrant colors and a less cluttered look. The Nuvi also has a slightly more efficient user interface. In my tests, both GPS's created identical routes to the various addresses I entered. Other things I noticed... I had a problem getting my computer to recognize the Magellan. I did the firmware update, but it took about a 1/2 hour to get my computer to interface correctly with the Magellan. Pretty frustrating. Could be my computer though. The big advantage for the Magellan is the price. The price I paid was about half of the best price I could find on the Nuvi. The price difference alone is enough to make up for the small drawbacks of the Magellan. from Buy.com I bought this over many other choices because of the bluetooth. Boy was that a mistake. Won't allow you to voice dial, won't sync address book from phone, doesn't automatically connect to phone when you turn it on (hmmm, aren't these all things you would expect of a bluetooth handsfree?. The directions are OK, the text to speech works OK. Hope you never need support from Magellan. You'll be lucky if you can get someone that speeks English understandably, and even if you do all they know what to do is say "I'm sorry for your inconvenience". from Cnet.com This is an addition/update to an earlier review: I've had it for about 2 months, and I'm having problems with the car charger not charging the unit, NOR can I run the unit with the charger (I've read other people are having problems with the car chargers failing and getting a hassle about replacement from Magellan support); it really stinks to have your plugged- in unit tell you to charge it (as it shuts down) when you're trying to get somewhere. Car chargers aren't exactly a new item, so putting out faulty ones is inexcusable. It didn't come with a home charger so I guess I'll have to spring for one of them and possibly a non-Magellan car charger (why replace a faulty one for another of the same kind?). Also, it would have been nice to be able to contact Magellan to update their points of interest/road information, but that doesn't seem to be something Magellan (or their mapping contacts, rather) is all that interested in; I can add them myself and save them in my address list/favorites, but then I'm looking in two places for a POI, and I can't stop the outdated POI's from being displayed (if I can't update my POI's, at least let me delete or hide the outdated ones). Garmin has on their site a place where you can download POI's and free updates, I believe; why can't Magellan? Additionally (and this might be typical of most GPS units) on overcast/rainy days it's hard to establish satellite contact. from Buy.com Perfect GPS system so far and does everything without fail. This is my 2nd buy. Perfect routing, navigation, easy to handle, bluetooth helps while driving. No need to go for bigger size of screen .. it does what you need. GO for IT. from Buy.com I own this GPS as well as another newer model and this one beats it hands down. User friendly,clear instructions,bell to alert you is great bonus. Took it on a 13hr.trip out of state, alone to the land of unknown and never got lost! The street names & left/right announcements are helpful as well as the bluetooth which works perfectly. The address book stores up to 200 entries and is easily accessable. When it starts getting dark the night mode kicks in and makes the unit less distracting. I printed maps too at first but now I don't bother.
