It turns out that for 300 plus dollars, you don't get a torque limiter or shear pins so the motor turns until your release the switch or the belt breaks. The trick is to stop the unit immediately if it stops throwing snow. That's important because the belt is about $25 and you can only get it at a Toro dealer or parts warehouse. It is supposed to be made out of Kevlar but if it is, the it is a very thin grade Kevlar.
This Toro Snow Thrower was delivered in top mint condition and with great instructions and all contents included in the original shipping box. Great experience with this item and shipper.
The tough stuff is the windrow the city plow pushes up in front of the mail box and drive way. It is very dense, heavy and contains gravel. I found I could blow that too, although I had to take small passes and not push the Toro too hard. No small blower on the block can handle that stuff any better, it takes a big high horsepower self-propelled 2-stage blower to cut through that well, but mine worked OK.
No maintenance - there isn't any hardcore upkeep of this thing - at least like there is with a gas blower. 4. Ample power - I find it fairly easy to push depending on the amount and texture of snow. I haven't had any issues clearing my driveway and sidewalk using the Toro 1800 (in NJ).
My experience with the Toro electric snowblower is the same as many others: Use it for a few hours or a few minutes; it stops working; then, no matter how many times you repair it, never works again for more than a few minutes.
OK, so this thing isn't a huge, gas-powered snow thrower. It's a small electric, and you have to make some allowances.
i bought this snow thrower for my dad who lives in wisconsin. it's been over a year now and so far he's really happy w/ the product. they get pretty deep snow out there, but nothing the toro 1800 can't handle. my parents especially like the electrical part, b/c they don't like the ordor emitted from gas blowers.
Other reviews have said that since the machine has some plastic casing, it's not able to dig through ice and such. For the most part I agree. If you have a lot of ice build-up on your driveway, this thrower won't be able to dig through it with the power that the gas monsters have. However, our driveway was covered in about a foot of snow that had mostly frozen.
I ONLY USE THIS MACHINE FOR 3 TIMES AND IT JUST START TO SMELL LIKE SOMETHING IS BURNING, I GOT REALLY SCARED CAUSE IT IS ELECTRIC... I DIDN'T WANT TO GET SHOCK. SO I STOP AND WAIT A WHILE TO START IT AGAIN, THIS TIME IT WON'T THROW THE SNOW LIKE IT DID BEFORE IT JUST DROPED ITS POWER BY HALF... THAT WASN'T FUN.
Overall: one of the best power tools I have bought, ever. This machine is light, powerful, and effective.
