Test drive the Riccar Supralite RSL3 or the equivalent Simplicity brand. It's suction is amazing, and my 9-year-old can lift it (AND USE IT) very easily.

If you are looking for an upright I recommend the Dyson 18 Slim. It is lightweight and powerful. The Dyson vacuums are a great machine. I use one myself and love it!! I use the DC15, which isn't light weight but the long hose allows me to do my steps with no problem at all. You can check this out for more info:
