There is a difference. In a vacuum coffee maker water is heated in the bottom compartment. As the pressure builds, the water rises to the top and mixes with the coffee. It is supposedly close in taste to a french press, but without the sediment you sometimes get. That being said, I have had some extraordinary coffee from a traditional french press.
