In simple terms the number of megapixels will determine the quality your images. It represents the number of dots in your picture, so the higher the number , the sharper the image. However, unless you will be printing large versions of your photos, anything around 5 or 6 megapixels should work fine. If you are going to be printing photos 11 x 14 or larger, you may want to consider going higher.
