Experts will tell you that a burr grinder is preferable to a blade grinder because it crushes the beans between two metal wheels as oppose to chopping them with a high speed blade. The heat involved with a blade grinder can give the beans a subtle “burnt” flavor.

A blade grinder uses a metal blade to chop up the beans. They are inexpensive and for basic use. They can leave you with coffee grounds that are unevenly chopped.
A burr grinder crushes the beans and gives a more consistent grind.
