That could depend on the codes in your area. I feel that for a few dollars spent on getting a pan, you might save some flooding in your basement. While the pan won't hold all the water a machine can put out, it's does hold a lot of it. Nothing like going down to the basement and stepping in inches of water on the floor...yuk! Spend a few dollars and save yourself the hassle later.
