The first coffee pod brewers - Senseo - were designed and manufactured through a collaboration between Philips and coffee roasters Douwe Egberts. (Which is why so many of the Senseo coffee pods still come from coffee Douwe Egberts.) Both of those companies are from the Netherlands. Hence the early adoption of coffee pod brewers in Europe.
