We have many of these that have been running fine for 4+ years. We upgraded the software to play better with the FVS318's and POW, they FVS114's need constant reboots on all networks. Netgear support is non existant! from Compusa.com But for the most part it worked great. It always did have a problem like the others are saying, it will just lock up and get stuck doing something and not stop until you pull the plug and restart. I was glad to still see it after these years so I bought another, but Netgear changed something after these years, the firmware I guess, and this new model will lock up if you use the VPN or even your childrens 3d chat will kill it and force you to unplug and plug it back just to get your internet back, Netgear really dropped the ball, they used to be really good, but this new firmware is horrible, the old one only locked up once every 4 months, this new one failed 2 days after I installed it, and already I had to unplug and plug it in 10 times. You also want to notice the web interface changed in the newer models, it no longer has the Active X, Java, Proxy block options you have with this model. from Compusa.com Reviewed newsgroups and found that DOWNGRADING to an earlier firmware version is required to solve problems. Downgraded firmware, unit APPEARS to be functioning as-intended but the jury is still out as others have reported problems even after downgrading. Promising product on-paper, but Netgear's programmers and engineers really dropped the ball on their recent firmware ''upgrade'' releases. Since you have to pay extra for product support, BUY WITH EXTREME CAUTION. from Compusa.com The only stable firmware for this product is the 1.01 version. All subsequent firmware releases (1.06, 1.10) are unstable. The nat does not clean up unused tcp connections and will die under heavy loads (heavy being running something such as eMule for more than a day). The router software is extraordinarily inefficient; it cannot juggle streaming media and regular browsing. from Amazon.com We've never had any problems with them, and so, at least as firewalls, they do the job. Switches are cheap: just buy a netgear 16 port switch and put it behind these. The one at home always need reboot, once kids get home and started their X-Box360 online games -- every 20 minutes to two hours. I contacted Netgear support, reported the problem. They provided me a beta firmware, version 1114, which keeps the router running for a week and have no reboot any more. from Amazon.com Generally OK, but lacking some flexibility in configuring firewall exceptions and has some obscure bugs in the firmware that Netgear has acknowledged to us but not fixed in 6+ months. from Amazon.com
