The machine can be used without the gasket and peg (they are a team, so don't try to use one without the other - it overruns and splatters everywhere.) I am now using my machine without them and tamping the grounds myself.

If you read the instructions carefully, it tells you to only remove the gasket if you are using PODS...not for manual tamping.
