DVD Players for Hd-Dvd Buying Guide
Want to upgrade your home theater to play the latest High Definition DVDs? With the format war settled between Blu-ray and HD-DVD format disks, its a good time to make the purchase. Blu-ray was crowned the victor, but that doesn't mean that HD DVD players aren't a good buy -- there are still a lot of HD DVDs out there and if you have some of them in your collection, you'll want a player that can read them. HD-DVDs will stop being produced soon, though, so be aware that you may not be able to find new HD-DVD titles.
New combo units feature BluRay and HD-DVD compatible readers, so you can get the best of both worlds. If you have the budget, we recommend going this route. Otherwise, the prices on HD-DVD readers are going down since the format is discontinued. HD-DVD players will still play your regular DVDs, as well, so you don't have to worry about keeping your obsolete DVD player.
Most people also burn their own DVDs or have home videos saved on DVDs or CD-Rs. If you want to enjoy them, make sure the DVD player can read both the disk type and the file type. Many home videos will be in MPEG2 or MPEG4 format, but videos such as movies will be in DivX, AVI, or even WMV format. Make sure the player you get reads multiple versions if you use your own discs often.
