Once the machine boots, it responds to key presses on the remote as fast as any DVD player. I dont see any improvement in picture quality or resolution when watching standard DVDs. Setting the Toshiba to a higher resolution only means I get a smaller picture with a big border when watching certain of my standard DVDs. With a standard DVD player I used to get some blotchy effects in large areas of uniform color. from Vanns.com Well, smart move; I don't think Blue Ray is moving much faster than the overpriced PS3's on EBay are. Now that you have decided HD-DVD is your candy of choice, why buy an HD-DVD player when you can have a regular Xbox 360 (which if you are smart already have one) play them for you? Yes, Microsoft has yet to say which DVD format they support (*coughing Toshiba makes MS hard drive disks and Toshiba is also behind the creation of the HD-DVD, not to mention has a higher proprietary rights percentage on the standard DVD development) but they have included a nice "add on" to the Xbox 360 that will allow you to play HD-DVD in 1080p through your Xbox for $189.00. It will not play any of the new HD-DVD's like The Bourne Ultimatum, or Transofrmers without a firmware upgrade, which seems to be impossible to install. Why on earth Toshiba didn't include a firmware upgrade CD with a currently shipping unit is beyond comprehension. I returned mine immediately and instead got a Denon 1080p-upconverting player and am happy with the picture quality. Bottom line: Toshiba's HD DVD players are not yet ready for prime-time.
