This DVD/CD player does exactly what it says it will and does it well. The player is a solid well built DVD player that I mated with a Yamaha RX-V3900 receiver to play Cd's and DVD's and it does a beautiful job. I do not however play SACD's or DVD- Audio discs so I can't comment on that. from Crutchfield.com I have always liked Yamaha products, and this DVD player is no disapointment. The upconverted picture looks fantastic, the features and instruction manual are very good. from Crutchfield.com I did a lot of on-line research before buying a DVD player to go with my home entertainment system. I liked what I read about Yamaha products, and was familiar with thier speakers. from Crutchfield.com I'm not a huge videophile, and don't know much about Yamaha (or mass-market mid-fi) but it seems the Oppos get all the press for less $$ and the Denons are the choice at this price and above. I can say the 2ch sound through a highly resolving system on CD, SACD and DVD-A is VERY good, distressingly close to my $5K CD rig, and noticeably better than the similar DVD-S1700 it replaced, mainly for this reason. from Abt.com HD650 headphones. The sound is solid. It's apparent that Yamaha went through a lot of trouble to make a good universal player. Compared to my other players that don't support DVD-A (but will play DTS or Dolby Dig) the sound is very clear. from Cnet.com I recently upgraded everything in my HT setup, purchasing a new Yamaha RX-V1800 receiver, as well as Polk RTI A7 front speakers, Polk RTI A3 rear speakers, a Polk CSI A6 center channel and a Polk PSW505 subwoofer to go along with my PS3. After sampling some hi-def audio (the PS3 can play SACDs), I purchased this player to take advantage of its ability to send DSD signal straight to the receiver for maximum sound quality on SACDs. from Amazon.com I only have to guess that everything's configured correctly and that it's using the DVD-A layer. SACD is a little more straightforward because in general if it's 5.1 surround then it's working. Solid appearance with the 4 big feet.
