this was an upgrade to our earlier philips dvd player (not sure of the model), the major improvement in this is that it plays more formats than the earlier one we had (mpeg4 for example).

philips is just another name for magnavox (and i don't like magnavox products based on many years in the tv repair business), but i will give them credit for producing a good product at a good price.
