the person i gave this to is young and absolutely loves the game.
the controls are simple with left hand move and right hand shoot and as simple as that sounds it's not.
in terms of gameplay, it feels like space invaders mixed with galaga/galaxian and a huge case of attention deficit disorder.
celebrating it's 30th anniversary, the core gameplay of space invaders remains basically the same, but now the enemies you shoot have new powers and abilities, and each level ends with a great boss
if offered simple yet addictive gameplay.
in 2006, the game was re-released for the game boy advance, under the name, "final fantasy iv advance".
the game has gone completely 3d with new voice-overs, but with the original gameplay intact.
i would have liked to see it possible to enter commands using the touch screen instead of the directional pad, but the controls work pretty well the way they are.
that was...*cough*evilwall*cough*...final fantasy iv was then re-released on the final fantasy chronicles game set along with chrono trigger, replete with new cgi cutscenes to further the gameplay.
there were two kinds of people i showed this to back in the day: people who couldn't even comprehend a game where instead of controlling a character directly you issued them orders and watched them
this game is fun and mildly challenging (for a 32yr old) im sure if i was 20yrs younger i would have beaten it by now.
the only thing i don't like about the game is when you want to buy something for your charactor, it can cost a lot, and it isn't always easy to get money.
today we sit and think, "how generic." back then, though, it was as popular of an idea as playing a rhythm-based game with a guitar controller.
however the game does allow you to challenge yourself with the other job classes, which in turn can make the game very easy or very difficult.
starting with the playstation one and later the game boy advance, squaresoft has started churning out reworkings of the final fantasy series, the way they were meant to be experienced.
