Dryers for Home Use Buying Guide

The search for a new dryer can be tedious, but it is an important purchase that most of us will only make a few times in our life. Whether you're buying your first dryer or replacing your old dryer, there are a few considerations you'll need to keep in mind to ensure you make a smart purchase.

Stackable dryers are just what they sound like; they "stack" on top of the other appliances in your laundry room. If space is at a premium, or if you're buying a new washer at the same time, a stackable dryer is a great solution. They take up about half the space of side-by-side units, and as an added bonus, they'll save your back, since one of the units will be at waist or chest level.

Check the capacity of your dryer before purchasing and think about the volume of your laundry needs, especially if you have a big family. The best dryer volume for home use starts at about 7 cubic feet; larger families and those who do many loads of laundry in a week will want a larger capacity, naturally. Remember that the ideal dryer will provide enough space for your clothes to move around in the air flow. You don't want to cram!

Consider your dryer's power source as well. You can keep your electric bill down by purchasing a gas-powered dryer, but not all homes allow for gas-fueled appliances. And if you're paying your own gas bill, too, costs may fluctuate throughout the year.

A well-built dryer can last a decade or more, so choose wisely!
