Wize Buying Guide for Energy Efficiency
Whether you're buying your first dishwasher or replacing that aging unit wedged under your counter, there are many energy efficient models which could save you money, especially if you've been using an outdated dishwasher at home. Before you buy, there are a number of energy factors you will want to consider to ensure maximum value and efficiency.

The first thing to look for, of course, is an Energy Star rating. This means the unit meets criteria in terms of electric consumption and power saving. However, an Energy Star rating does not necessarily mean you are getting the most energy efficient dishwasher possible; there are several other factors to consider.

Look for a dishwasher with an Energy Factor (EF) of at least .65, which translates to an energy use of less than 340 kWh a year. This rating measures the number of cycles that can be run with 1 kWh of electricity.

Other features to look for that will save energy in the long run are dishwashers with several wash cycle selections, so you can use only the energy and water you need for smaller loads. You might also consider an energy-saving "no-heat dry" setting, which uses fans rather than an electrical heating element.

Machines that use 8 gallons or less use less energy and waste less water. Better performing units will go up in price, so find the sweet spot for your budget and take the plunge. Remember that an energy efficient dishwasher will save you money in the long run, so don't be afraid to spend a little more money up front.
