Let me start off by saying I am not in anyway affiliated with Tivo or Direct-TV. If you go to this system from a Tivo you will hate yourself, I wanted to go HD and 5.1. It was cheaper to go to the Dish network, oops! I don't even know where to start with this thing..
We own a Samsung PN50A550 Plasma HDTV. When you drive a "cadillac" you don't go cheap with the peripherals; you get good quality. Anyway, we have the DISH Total HD package; nothing but HD bliss. I ordered the 612 to replace the HD receiver that we had that wasn't a DVR as well.
We have two of these DVR's and have been happy. It does not have all of the TIVO features but has a well laid out interface and produces has a great picture (to me). My only compliant may be more with the Dish Network, in that we were getting a lot of digital breakups and artifacts in the HD programming. It has gotten better after a service call to realign the dish.
I can't really rate this receiver fairly because I only have the standard definition dish, and this receiver can't be activated without adding another dish to my roof. At least that's what the Dish Network technical support representatives told me.
I measured it with my Kill-A-Watt meter and this satellite box uses 40 watts minimum whether it's on or off. In a year that's 350 kWhr.
Pros: All functions work as advertised. Cons: USES AS MUCH POWER AS A FULL SIZE REFRIGERATOR!
