The features on this camera are exceptionally good for a sub[$] camcorder. Manual whitebalance, F/stop and appeture settings are very easy to use with easy buttons placed outside on the camera body. JVC's soft menu layout is easy to follow after your initial practice. Take two hours to practice all the settings before your shoot. from Bhphotovideo.com I first purchased a more expensive JVC GZ-HD7 and was NOT HAPPY with the camera:-every 17min of HI-DEF recording caused a 1/2 second sound blackout.-every 17min the FAT filesystem forced a new file ( 2GB per file )-low light was really bad ( low framerate )-quality of the image was inferior-total of 4.5 Hours on the 120GB drive ( NO WAY!!! )-format of files was really bad ( no editing software support )-the menu was BAD, either all auto or manual all the way ( including focus )-only 60i which makes online video authoring a problem. from Circuitcity.com My poor old pc needs an upgrade before I'll be able to process videos longer than a few minutes - full HD . It's not helpful to include that information here, especially if the reviewer has not even used the HD7. For the second group, I'd agree that the GZ-HD7 does not perform very well as a "point and shoot" camcorder. To get the most out of it, it should be operated in manual mode. from Amazon.com Despite many hours or work and attempts to get assistance from JVC I have not been able to get this Camcorder to copy files to my well-resourced, high-speed vista computer. The JVC customer support system doesn't help either. from Amazon.com I also purchased a "V" adapter that mounts on the shoe of the camcorder to accommodate the Sennheiser wireless receiver and shotgun microphone. I now have professional clarity audio on my recordings. The Everio software that comes with camcorder is a must use in my experience to convert camera footage from on board hard drive to be able to edit MPEG2 1080i footage with my Sony Vegas 7.0 nonlinear editing software. I have three Dell P4 desktops that are not able to play high def footage as the files are too large for these computer to play them without choking. from Amazon.com It is a 30 Gb paper weight, except it will still shoot to memory card, which then can be removed, and video transfered. All this for $700.00. JVC website is lacking and if you think phone support is any better save you dime. I would say do not walk away run holding onto your wallet. from Amazon.com
