After doing extensive research, I purchased Danby unit from Amazon based on Consumer Reports review on a similar model.
I bought this dehumidifier based on the number one ranking of a similar model.
I live in a cold and damp basement apartment, so the fact that it gives off heat isn't a bad thing.
I purchased two of these for use in a 1100 sq ft unfinished basement with dirt floors.
There is no removable bucket, so unless you want to lift up 50+ pounds every time the dehumidifier is full, save yourself the trouble of buying this.
Royal Sovereign bdh-550 worked great for a few months.
The first unit I purchased was defective upon arrival and would not even turn on, so it had to be sent back.
We could not get the Royal Soverign dehumidifier to work.
strengths: mechanical controls-will restart automatically after power outage, energy star rating, bucket in front weaknesses: will have small amount of water in bucket even when connected to a
it is energy star rated, and (according to the manual) consumes 520 watts of energy.
the whole unit has a handle on the top, making it easy to carry.
it's easy to use, fairly quiet.
it's simple to use.
this product was built for and meant for small rooms and will keep the air from becoming too damp (and so creating mildew and mold) and will freshen the air, allowing for cleaner air.
it didn't collect any water at all, even thought it was noisy and gave off heat.
i bought two of them and the other unit started making this horrible loud rattling sound.
not only is it small and compact, but it also works great!
when it first came on it made a rattling noise for a few moments, then became quiet again.
runs fantastic, nice looking dehumidifier, a tad bit on the noisy side but it is in the basement so it's not so much of an issue describe yourself: homeowner primary use of this product: personal
[...]the dehumidifier works as it should...the water pan is a little awkward to empty as most of them are....great value...i saved approximately $60.00 over the in store product...
the air in our basement used to be musty.ever since we got this product the basement is the best smelling room in our house.it takes care of moisture really good.
the entire basement is extremely humid, and we began to notice mold growing on lower walls, video game boxes, and items stored in boxes.we've had the above product for only 3 weeks, so my experience
i purchased this product to eliminate the moldy basement smell, and it worked perfectly.
it works well, but it is noisy pros: compact, easy to assemble, easy to clean, powerful cons: loud best uses: everyday use
it works well, but it is noisy
it is extremely quiet.

took only 2 minutes to set up drain hose out of the box and works quietly and efficiently.
energy star-rated.
ease of use.
electronic control board and panel easy to use.
quiet operation.
pros: quieter, effective, many settings/controllability cons: plastic odor is so strong we can't use it inside!
very quiet compared to the old dehumidifier it replaced.
i purchased this unit several days ago for use in a finished basement, and i have been pleased with it.
this dehumidifier was recently the top rated medium sized dehumidifier by consumer reports (6/08).
the hose drain was a little tricky to install, but i have not had to empty the unit since it was installed.
i bought one of these in july, 2006 and it worked ok until recently, when it started making louder noise and was dehumidifying less.
This is Wisconsin, so we only use dehumidifiers in April through mid September.
Don't bother with the LG dehumidifier either...mine stopped working after 1 season.
Don't buy this dehumidifier!!!!
Fan Died in less than two years...kind of disappointed.
great price but my electronics died after just 2 weeks.
the bottom line: too loud unless you are going to close the door to the basement.
loud.
cons: louder than tv !!!
pros: easy to assemble, the unit does the work cons: this unit is too noicy best uses: basement
pros: removed humidity fast very easy to use the model carried by lowe's and target.
Bought a LG with a 5 year warranty for less money than the kenmore, and so far it's much quieter.
Although it's not in the writeup, the one I just purchased has a defrost cycle and will operate at temperatures down to 42 degrees according to the manual.
As with many of the reviews that I've read here, this Kenmore dehumidifier stopped working right after the warranty expired.
will think twice before buying anything "kenmore".
Bought first unit 2 yrs ago with extended warranty.
After only a week, this dehumidifier has made a huge difference in the air quality and smell in my basement.
Another Sears dehumidifier that is a piece of junk.
As described by the majority of reviews - this appliance lasted one summer and than died...
Barely used it and only lasted 1.5 years.
Broke after 2 years....started leaking all over the place and that was it.
easy to use controls and settings, and sucks moisture out quickly.
unit is a little noisy but since its staying in the basement doesnt bother me.
the noise, while not loud is hard to ignore.
pros: quiet, great job at dehumidifying the air.
cons: priced in the range of similar size units with more electronic glitz.
