I needed the JBL Duetal powered speakers to work with my LCD TV Box (converts a cast-off LCD display to a TV system) because it was not able to drive the 18 inch LCD Monitor built-in speakers (not powered). The JBL speakers are an excellent inexpensive stereo set and yes, the on/off volume control knob is weak. from Overstock.com Pros: The 2 that work sound really good... Cons: The power supply was bad on 1 out of 3 sets I purchased. Contacted JBL directly in hopes that they would just send a new wall plug, but they said the only option was returning the whole package to Newegg. Other Thoughts: Shouldn't they check those things at the factory? from Newegg.com As other reviewers have mentioned these speakers are good for jazz, classical, vocals etc but don't expect the booming thump of a 3 speaker system... Cons: As others have warned, the on/off/vol knob is a nuissance..darn thing is so slippery you do need to hold the speaker to turn the knob..just a minor gripe IMHO Other Thoughts: Overall, I am very satisfied with the quality of these speakers... I've never own a JBL system b4 but judging from the quality of these speakers I would definitely be a return customer from Newegg.com The JBL speakers i purchased work great and sound terriffic. i see no down side to them, They cover all the ranges. from Amazon.com Having said all that, now that I'm a student and spend most of my time in front of a laptop or else studying, my main criteria for speakers became PORTABILITY, portability, and more portability. I wanted something light, easy to set up, easy to throw in a bag and travel with, and not nearly as expensive as my Klipsch 2.1's but with a comparable sound value for the price. I was going to go with 'the other' pair of portable speakers that is popular on Amazon but picked the JBL's for their bass and the fact they were specifically designed to reproduce a 'bigger' sound for their size. My search is finally ended. This pair of JBL Duet PC Speakers are the finest sounding "computer" speakers I have ever heard. I hooked them up yesterday immediately after receiving them and have not been able to stop listening to them. from Amazon.com It's natural-sounding and open, not stuffy or forced, yet it has a surprising amount of punch for such small speakers, without being the slightest bit "boomy". To my ears in my listening environment, they have an amazingly smooth frequency response across the entire audible range. In case you think I'm kidding, I usually mix on a pair of Genelec tri-amped studio monitors whose price tag was more than 100 times that of the JBL Duet speakers. On several occasions, I've opened GarageBand or Logic Pro 7 to record a musical idea and ended up doing a rough mix, forgetting that I was listening to the Duet speakers rather than the big monitors. from Amazon.com WOW!
