i can take the carafe off the coffee maker and put it on my countertop and drink throughout the day.

tighten it, just snug it and if it does become tight (since everything expands as it is warmed) simply place the carafe on the countertop, press down on the lid while turning and it loosens easily.

sometimes it spills over the carafe onto the countertop; as long as you're careful setting this up it won't leak.

other thoughts: be advised: taking the clever top off of the carafe allows the coffee to enter the carafe, as is expected, rather than going all over your countertop.i just learned that.
