If it were a glass part I don't think this would happen. Over 12 months, we replaced two of these parts, then the heating element burned out. Cuisinart offers a three-year warranty, so we will get a replacement unit at some nominal cost, but I'm deducting a few stars from its rating due to poor design of a key part and poor reliability. from Amazon.com Fantastic coffee! I love the ease of use and ease of cleaning. The one drawbck to this percolator is the grounds that seem to always get into the bottom of the percolator and in my cup of coffee.
