i use my regular size permanent filter from my old pot and works fine, no overflow or anything, kitchenaid does have a permanent filter for this $39.95 at kitchenaid.com and it is as large as coffee

I called Kitchenaid and they said you must have the decanter set perfectly positioned on the warming tray with the handle facing the middle (not stated in the instructional booklet).
