In 2006, SDI Technologies followed up on its original iHome iH5 iPod-compatible clock radio with the iH7BR, an enhanced version of the iH5 that carried a more expensive price tag ($150 list) and featured an expansion "bedside speaker" that provided better stereo separation for slightly improved sound. Now we have the iH8, which costs $50 less and is essentially an iH7BR minus the extra speaker and the USB slot for an iPod Shuffle.
This alarm clock woke our guests one flight down and four rooms over on the other side of the house before we could find the off button. The buttons are small with tiny type our sleepy eyes couldn't read. Bed Bath & Beyond said iHome fixed the issue in the latest version and would repair our clock radio for a large fee plus we would have to pay the shipping charges. It's cheaper to chuck it and replace it.
I found myself hitting snooze to kill the noise, not just to go back to sleep. Very frustrating. Lastly, if you use sleep mode with the ipod, the display of the ipod comes on as the ihome shuts off, which is very bright at a nightstand in a dark room. I awoke to this several times and finally had enough.
The remote is a basic one but does everything you really need it to, and needs to be pointed fairly directly to work. The controls on the unit itself are on the top and are dummy-proof. We got the white one which is very nice looking--the speaker grilles are silvery color, and the whole unit is smaller than you'd think--it's about 10.5" long and about 3.5" tall--just right for a dorm room desk or bed shelf. There's an output plug on the back for another speaker if you want, but it's not really needed.
i put it in my kitchen and you can hear it throughout the living room and it still sounds great.
after living with it awhile, i ended up putting our old bookshelf stereo system in the basement and setting this up in the kitchen in its place.

i had it by my bed for awhile and loved the sound, but after awhile decided it was too bright at night (the blue is dimmable but still pretty bright).
radio reception is not very good.
we bought this alarm clock because i like to listen to music while i am upstairs (just bedrooms) and i don't want to have a separate stereo in already tight quarters.
