it's narrow enough to allow for 2 other passengers to sit in the backseat of the car (the carseat is in the back middle).
since it sits straight up, i wouldn't want to use this as our every-day car seat (not too comfy for sleeping) but it's great for a second vehicle or where there isn't much room in the backseat.
however, the narrowness of the seat is a big plus when it was used in a 2-door with a small backseat.

the seat was already extremely secure without it, but it gives us peace of mind that the seat won't fold up against the backseat in a crash.
this one is a bit large for a smaller car...it doesn't leave a whole lot of room for more than one more person in the backseat.
some backseats didn't seem to accomodate it as well, and it would rest at an odd angle no matter how we repositioned it.

this was an issue for our car because of the size/shape of the doorway and backseat.
the car seat is nicer in person than in the pictures, fits in the backseat of my little '93 subaru impreza, is easy to buckle in for switching vehicles, and will hopefully be roomy enough for many

he has been forward facing since he was 20 lbs (about 13 months) and really loves being able to see out - the seat gives him a high 'perch' from our backseat!
