Camera Lenses for Digital Cameras Buying Guide

Before you get overwhelmed by the many different camera brands and products on the market, remember what you’re shopping for: if you’re in the market for a digital camera lens, there are seven main lens types to choose from.

  • Regular: 35 or 50 mm

  • Zoom: ranging from 5.4 – 200 mm

  • Telephoto: ranging from 80 – 500 mm

  • Wide angle: 18 – 35 mm

  • Fish eye: 6 – 16 mm

  • Macro: 17 – 70 mm

  • Fixed focal length: various lengths

When you’re deciding on the type of lens you want, you should focus on some key characteristics and determine what’s right for you. Do you want an automatic lens or a manual lens – or do you want both? And keep in mind that the aperture speed of the lens must be compatible with your camera.

Do you use your camera outside or for travel ? Lightweight lenses are more mobile and do not require a tripod. Long and large lenses are great for capturing beautiful detail, but they will require a sturdy tripod.

Once you know what you want from your digital camera lens, your decision should be a cinch!
