i couldn't believe the detail and resolution with the fact that i was hand holding the camera.
to be able to capture the detail i did with a [...] zoom lens is a good thing.

this particular lens is an "ed" and assembled by hand (as opposed to the kit lenses, which still deliver excellent results) and delivers outstanding images with sharp details.
but i'm not knocking too hard it for that; that one bird you get is in incredibly detailed focus.
what i hadn't expected is that it is also good at close-ups from a distance.
when i need to get a close-up shot without needing to get in close this is the lens to go to.
the macro feature is awesome!it really brings out the detail in close up pictures.
sigma 70-200mm meets my expectation, the images are detailed and sharp even pixel peeped.
the only thing about this is there is like the tiny little bit of wiggle in the connection.
hairs/eylashes were razor sharp (sharpness is desirable with young unblemished subjects) flesh tones were right on.
on my camera, a 400d, a 50mm is like a short tele, and i use it mostly for relatively close up photos of people.

for the 3rd day, i test it in details and found that the sharpest is f/10 not f/8.
i shot all my pictures handheld with the os (is) set to 2 and even at the highest zoom (500mm) pics where razor sharp and super detailed!

it also gives you a nice bokeh between 2.8 to 4 for close up photography.
this lens is also great for close up/macro photography of flowers,etc.

the protruding front element had some tiny bit of radial play, however the packaging was slightly damaged on the plane home.
the colors are neutral if not just a tiny bit on the warm side.
it really shows all the (detailed) glory of your sensor.
not a macro, but definitely useable for lots of close-ups.
the resolving power is greater than my eyes can do as it picks up the texture on white paper and fine details in text i would only see with a macro lens, these details are lost ( tho the shot is sharp
size (relative to primes, tiny compared to 70-200mm f/2.8)
[5] canon 18-55 is ______ small f/5.6 = smallest highlight, boring photos
but, l lenses make it much easier to not worry about little details.
i've gotten the lens to produce some pretty good detail.
i'll leave the technical details to the other reviewers, but from a casual photographer, this is about the only lens i'll need the majority of the time.
everything else, by comparison, is a minor detail.
