i've never tried it for making shakes or smoothies, to me a regular blender would be better.
i'm a lazy cook, but this actually makes me want to make soups and smoothies b/c it's so ridiculously easy to use and clean.
when i used it to make smoothies, i found that not only is it smaller and less expensive than a traditional blender - it's easier to use and clean as well.
i have had this blender for about a year and have used it weekly for smoothies with great success.

it will quickly blend up banana in a milkshake so smoothly that you don't even know that it's in there, the other hand blender we used prior to purchasing this one would always leave detectable bits

however, having only a two blade tip it doesn't work for recipes calling for ice, like some smoothies.
