This MSI computer seems to be a good machine. I couldn't get the built in Wi-Fi to work though. from Amazon.com The Wind PC is ***NOT*** intended to play videos or games. How foolish can anyone be to assume so when it has a 1.6GHz single core processor ? from Amazon.com It's a pretty decent low power system, and MSI did add a couple of nice things I'll describe below. The box is a bit heavy for the size. from Amazon.com This was my first build - very few problems. Installed OpenSuse Linux on an 8Gb 266X CF card. Unable to get Suse to recognise Realtek audio - there are workarrounds on forums & MSI websites. Suse does not have drivers for my printer (Lexmark), which was a pain. from Newegg.com Pros: Nice design, easy to build, everything appears to be high quality and designed for people with basic tools and assembly skills. Installed Fedora with Amahi home server software. The nettop streams video (and other media) to a PS3. However, it does not come with an expert system manual, and trying to figure out the key to push on startup so as to set up the bios for a Linux boot is not clear from any documentation. from Amazon.com Solid construction, more metal parts than I expected. Cons: drive bays in a piece of case connected to mb by a cable- it's a little bit annoying opening it up and fitting things in while not tensioning the cable connecting the two pieces together, but then how often do you need to open a case with only two bays? Other Thoughts: Pegging both cores at 100% utilization (dummy processes running pointless loops) for 15 min does nothing the fan can't easily handle at normal room temp (cyclical though, CPU temp runs up to about 58C then the fan cycles up and the temp drops). The HD I used (WD 1TB green) doesn't seem to have much of an effect on heat (if any) even when copying steadily for an hour or more. from Newegg.com It uses very little power, and it works with linux. Oh did I mention it's cheap. Cons: MSI didn't do a good job with this computer out of the box. I returned the first one when it wouldn't even boot to the bios (new egg was great about that). from Newegg.com Pros: Swapped over the drive from a 230 based unit to this one - no issues or drivers :). Not sure if HT really matters in this form-factor. Second Wind unit so far. Looking to turn the older one into a thin-client now. from Newegg.com I may try the split the heatsink in 2 and redo the thermal grease trick just for giggles ... probably would include a heatsink fan or install a fan in the case above (would have to drill holes). MSI forums have lots of good information .. haven't dug in too deep, but there are lots of nice hacks posted (i.e., split the heatsink, etc). from Newegg.com
