our baby weighs 14 pounds and i tote him around with nary a pain in my back or shoulders.
after a while, it does bother the knots in my upper back/shoulders, but i've definitely been able to handle an hour long shopping trip.
she did not feel secure and it killed my shoulders and back.
the key to no back pain is this: wear the carrier with the cross in the back at the middle of your back, below your shoulder blades.
the only complaint i have is that there are straps and buckles near the shoulders/arms of the baby and if worn with the flap down it leaves red marks on her skin, but nothing like a bruise or cutting
the straps aren't so padded as i thought, and if i have it on too long i'll get some back and shoulder pain.
my baby is also tall for her age and so her shoulders were a little too tall for the arm holes once she reached about 4 months.
the only reason it got 4 stars is because the shoulder straps are really thin.
it's not too hard on the shoulders and back either.
i'm giving it four stars because i find it hurts my shoulders after a while and i can't sit comfortably with it.
she's even laid her head down on my shoulder and fallen asleep.
& it's very sturdy, easily washable, works for either shoulder & is very comfortable.

i did some walking with my daughter and got no back or shoulder pain.

the shoulder-cupping theory works well in practice, at least with my son who is 7.5 kilos right now.

if the carrier isn't sitting high enough you will feel pressure in your shoulders, and if its not tight enough you will feel it in your lower back.

this hip carrier is much more comfortable than the hip hammock, which hurt my shoulder and neck area.
a little more padding on the shoulder strap and some on the waist strap would make it perfect.
hint: to prevent the strap from hurting your shoulder over a long period, just be sure that the diagonal strap across your back is pulled low so that the shoulder strap rests on your shoulder
this carrier supports my back and shoulders by greatly diminishing the weight and strain of carrying my chunky monkey -- and he seems so-o-o comfortable!
i only gave it 4 stars because the shoulder strap needs a little more padding.

fyi- because it doesn't adjust one size does not fit all-- my husband's shoulders are too big to wear my peanut shell, so he uses the bjorn.
after much practice and adjusting the shoulder outward creating less of a pouch, he is able to sit up.
in the hip carry the weight pulls on one shoulder and pushes in on the opposite hip.
i originally have the classic baby bjorn carrier but did not like it too much since it caused major shoulder & back strain- my daughter was only 9 lbs.
even though the carrier may put some of the weight on your waist there is still some pressure on your shoulder.

and as far as comfort for the parent, you need to make adjustments to the torso height, and keep the hip belt tight to keep most of the weight on your hips instead of your shoulders.

the standard back and chest carriers that rest on the shoulders just hurt too much.
after about 10 minutes my shoulders hurt and after about 20 minutes my whole back hurt.

i love the look and idea but this thing kills my back and shoulder.
my son is too big for the cradle position, and too heavy to be carried around in a shoulder-type sling comfortably.
