Sometimes that may be true but, it's most likely not because of the unit itself; It's because the person on the other end of the phone didn't speak loud enough into the telephone for the answering machine to pick up clearly.

I replaced it with a combination telephone/answering machine/speaker phone -- which was really easy to use AND you could rely on it garbling the message at important points (such as in the middle of phone numbers).

Performance is very good, and I (and a musician friend who has perfect pitch) thought the voice/audio quality very acceptable, better than the unit it replaced and better than a wired telephone or maybe even an MP3, tho I don't have the volume turned...
