Best Air Conditioners for Sound

one of the biggest reason for getting the sharp units is how quiet they are suppose to be in the lowest setting--supposedly 36 db--however that is just the sound of the fan operating by

i was nervous to buy a window unit because after reading all the reviews on amazon i expected to plug it in and have it not work, sound like a tank, drip everywhere, etc.

there is a slight slushing sound from time to time but nothing excessive (it has been very humid lately in ny).

until yesterday i relied on a 12,000 btu sharp window unit ("the beast") facing down the long side of the l, and whose compressor sounded like a down-shifting tractor-trailer, isn't energy star

turn new unit after it rained, started making a terrible sound, went outside to check unit and got a face full water.

like another poster here i wouldn't exactly call this a "quiet" appliance; however i live in the city and was happy to swap the random all-night sounds of the city for the "white noise" grumbling of

the unit seems to generate an average amount of sound.

it kind of sounds like a dishwasher disposal.

i installed it in my old wood house and the vibration sounded (and felt, it shook the whole house) literally like a jackhammer.
